Proper Base Preparation

Everything starts with the base. We excavate to the proper depth, which varies depending on whether we are building a walkway or a driveway. Walkways typically need 8 to 10 inches of base material, while driveways need 12 inches or more to support vehicle weight without settling. We use crushed limestone or granite for the base, compacting it in layers to create a stable foundation that will not shift or sink.

We also grade the base to ensure proper water drainage away from your home. Standing water is the enemy of paver installations, so we plan drainage carefully. In areas with poor drainage, we can install French drains or other solutions to move water away from the paver surface.

Edge Restraints and Paver Installation

After preparing the base, we install edge restraints along the perimeter. These plastic or metal strips keep pavers from shifting outward over time. Without proper edge restraints, pavers can spread apart and create gaps. We stake edge restraints securely and make sure they are set at the correct height.

Next, we lay a thin layer of sand and screed it perfectly level. This bedding sand creates a smooth, even surface for the pavers. Final Compaction and Joint Sand

After all pavers are in place, we sweep polymeric sand into the joints. This special sand contains additives that make it harden when wetted, locking pavers together and preventing weed growth and insect intrusion. Then we compact the entire surface with a plate compactor, which seats the pavers firmly into the bedding sand and activates the polymeric sand.

The result is a solid, stable surface that looks great and performs reliably for years. We clean up thoroughly, removing all debris and excess materials. We also provide care instructions so you know how to maintain your new paver surface.
